Dr. Jitendra Singh, the Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, has said about ISRO's recent leverage of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning in space-related activities. Over the past three years, ISRO has actively incorporated these cutting-edge technologies, keeping pace with rapid advancements, Singh stated.

AI and Machine Learning are now integral to various aspects within ISRO, from launch vehicles and spacecraft operations to big data analytics, space robotics, and citizen-centric e-governance solutions. Singh mentioned these advancements in response to a query raised in the Rajya Sabha.

Singh emphasized ongoing projects in AI under the Department of Space, ranging from feasibility studies to implementation. Collaborative efforts with esteemed institutions like IITs and IISc are nurturing specialized AI applications, he noted.

The minister highlighted the integration of AI solutions into existing ISRO projects and programs, aligning with technical viability and mission goals. Importantly, the costs for these AI solutions are enveloped within the overall project funds.

Significant ISRO initiatives benefiting from AI integration encompass the Gaganyaan Program, recent Chandrayaan-3 mission, operational launch vehicles, spacecraft programs, and Earth observation data analysis.

Singh lauded AI's pivotal role in advancing space exploration, particularly in analyzing satellite data for India's remote sensing, meteorological, communication, and navigation satellites.

ISRO's strides in Earth observation applications are noteworthy. These include predicting crop yields, weather forecasting, disaster prediction, land use mapping, urban planning, and identifying changes in forests, roads, dams, and water bodies.

Singh highlighted the Department of Space's commitment to accelerating AI adoption across ISRO centers, fostering collaborations with the private sector. Efforts are underway for cross-center exchanges to share advancements in AI technology and its space applications.
