New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is gearing up to launch its first Flight Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1 (TV-D1) on October 21, marking a significant milestone in the nation's pursuit of its inaugural human space mission, Gaganyaan. This unmanned test flight will replicate an emergency scenario during the ascent phase, where the crew escape system will be activated to safeguard astronauts' well-being, as confirmed by official sources.

For this vital test, ISRO has acquired multiple mockups of the pressurized crew module (CM) from private industry collaborators. These mockups will be instrumental in the pre-crewed mission evaluation phase, ensuring the system's reliability and safety. The primary objective of the TV-D1 mission is to assess the hardware's ability to safely detach the crew module in cases of trajectory deviations or unforeseen issues shortly after liftoff. The CM for this test is equipped with a full set of pyrotechnics, parachutes, actuation systems, and aviation instruments.

The specially designed launch vehicle will propel the CM on an ascent trajectory at Mach 1.2, with the abort sequence scheduled to occur at an altitude of 1.7 kilometers. Upon the conclusion of the flight, the CM is anticipated to land securely in the Bay of Bengal.

ISRO Chairman S. Somanath has hinted at additional demonstration flights--labeled D2 through D4--following the TV-D1 test flight this week. These forthcoming missions will continue to validate the newly developed hardware's performance and safety measures.

Moreover, ISRO is also planning a future flight that will feature Vyommitra, a sophisticated gynoid designed to replace traditional biological testing, often involving monkeys and dogs, when developing hardware for crewed spaceflight capabilities. This innovative approach underscores India's commitment to ethical and technologically advanced space exploration.
