New Delhi: The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will conduct the first of four Flight Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1 (TV-D1) flights on October 21, showcasing the crew escape system for its Gaganyaan human space mission, as confirmed by ISRO Chairman S. Somanath.

The upcoming Flight Test Vehicle Abort Mission-1 (TV-D1) is part of a series of tests designed to evaluate the crew escape system. Somanath explained that there will be three more test flights (TV-D2, TV-D3, and TV-D4) to assess the systems further.

ISRO had recently stated that preparations for the TV-D1 mission are currently underway. The Test Vehicle for this abort mission is a single-stage liquid rocket that simulates abort conditions during the ascent trajectory, corresponding to a Mach number of 1.2 as encountered in the Gaganyaan mission.

During this test, the Crew Escape System with the Crew Module will be separated from the Test Vehicle at an altitude of approximately 17 km. Subsequently, an autonomous abort sequence will be initiated, including the separation of the Crew Escape System and the deployment of parachutes, ultimately leading to the safe landing of the Crew Module about 10 km from the coast of Sriharikota.

The Crew Module will be in an unpressurized condition for the TV-D1 mission, housing systems for deceleration and recovery. It will be equipped with a complete set of parachutes, recovery aids, actuation systems, and pyrotechnics.

The Crew Module is extensively instrumented to capture flight data, evaluating the performance of various systems. After touchdown in the Bay of Bengal, the Crew Module will be recovered with the assistance of the Indian Navy's dedicated vessel and diving team.

The success of this test flight is a significant milestone for ISRO's Gaganyaan program, setting the stage for the remaining qualification tests and unmanned missions, leading to the first Gaganyaan mission with Indian astronauts.
