On July 8, former Arsenal player Jack Wilshere took to his official social media space to announce his retirement from professional football. Despite admitting that he believes his career has recently slipped away due to factors beyond his control, the 30-year-old Englishman believes he has lived his dream.
Jack Wilshere wrote on Twitter in a statement, "Today, I am announcing my retirement from professional football: It has been an incredible journey filled with so many incredible moments, and I consider myself fortunate to have experienced everything that I did during my career. From kicking a ball around the garden as a small child to captaining my beloved Arsenal and representing my country in a World Cup. My dream has come true." He went on to say that it was difficult for him to admit that his career had recently declined.
"In truth, it has been difficult to accept that my career has been slipping away in recent years due to factors beyond my control while still believing that I have so much to offer. Having played at the highest level, I have always had huge ambitions in the game, and to be honest, I did not expect to be in this position at times. However, after reflecting and talking with those closest to me, I know that now is the right time, and despite the difficult times, I look back on my career with great pride at what I have accomplished "the 30-year-old added
Jack Wilshere was regarded as one of the future's stars after winning the PFA Young Player of the Year award with Arsenal in 2010-11. While he did win two FA Cups with the club in 2013-14 and 2014-15, injuries quickly derailed his career. He left Arsenal in June 2018 and joined West Ham United when his contract expired.
Wilshere only made eight Premier League appearances for the Hammers in each of his two seasons with the club. The club and Wilshere mutually agreed to end his contract at the end of his second season. He then moved to Bournemouth in 2020/21, where he made 17 appearances before his time at the Vitality Stadium was cut short due to another injury.
After signing his final professional contract with Danish Superliga club AGF on a short-term deal in February 2022, the Englishman announced his retirement shortly after. With him retiring at the age of 30, it is fair to say that a promising prospect's career may have ended in an unpromising manner.
