External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishanker and  Chinese foreign minister Wang Yi  met on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Dushanbe on Thursday, where  Jaishankar told Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi that China must not view India through the lens of its ties with other countries.

The external affairs minister said that India and China had to “deal with each other on merits” and establish a relationship based on mutual respect. He conveyed that India had never subscribed to any clash of civilizations theory,” a press release issued by the external affairs ministry stated.  Also exchanged views on global developments. Emphasized that India does not subscribe to any clash of civilizations theory. It is also essential that China does not view its relations with India through the lens of a third country.

According to the Ministry of external affairs, Jaishankar once again stressed that peace and tranquillity along the LAC, which depends on resolving all remaining issues of the 17-month-long standoff, was an “essential basis” for progress in bilateral relations, but it is understood the two Ministers did discuss global developments, including Afghanistan, during their talks.

A statement from China’s Foreign Ministry in Beijing quoted Chinese foreign minister Wang as saying that communication between the Foreign Ministries and militaries of both sides, in addressing the LAC issue, had been “effective” and that the situation was moving in the direction of “de-escalation”.
