New Delhi: India faced significant challenges during its tenure as G20 President, primarily due to the evident "East-West polarisation" and a pronounced "North-South divide," according to External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. Reflecting on the G20 Leaders' Summit held in New Delhi, Jaishankar acknowledged the complexities of presiding over the G20 during a time marked by sharp divisions between Eastern and Western nations and deep disparities between the Global North and the Global South.
He stated, "It was a challenging summit. It was actually a challenging presidency, and it was challenging because we were confronting a very sharp East-West polarisation as well as a very deep North-South divide. But we were very determined as the Presidency of the G20 to make sure that this organization on which the world really had put so much hope and was able to get back to its core agenda." Jaishankar also highlighted India's remarkable achievement in garnering unanimous support from all G20 members for the New Delhi Declaration, which addressed a wide range of issues, including the conflict in Ukraine.
One of the most notable accomplishments of India's G20 Presidency was the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration by all G20 members. "A lot of folks were still surprised that we actually got everybody together. I don't think they completely expected that. So, there'll be one set of people who are still wondering how that happened," noted the External Affairs Minister during an event in New York. India's focus during its G20 Presidency was centered on "global growth and development," which aligns with the core objectives of the group's formation.
Furthermore, Jaishankar emphasized that India successfully steered the G20's attention toward the Global South, rekindling the original purpose for which the G20 was established: fostering global growth and development. This was achieved through the organization of a Global South summit in advance of the G20 summit.
