Jammu: The historic City Chowk in Old Jammu has been renamed as 'Bharat Mata Chowk' by the Jammu and Kashmir administration. Authorities have given information in this regard on Sunday. Mixed reactions of people are coming to change the name of the historic square.

However, some people say that Jammu Municipal Corporation (JMC) should focus more on development and cleanliness instead of changing the names of places. While giving information to the media, senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and JMC Deputy General Purnima Sharma has told that the name of City Chowk has been changed on the demand of the public. He said that about four months ago, "I had proposed to change the name in the house. After which City Chowk has been renamed as 'Bharat Mata Chowk'."

Sharma has further stated that this place is historic. It has witnessed many major decisions and demonstrations. People hoist the tricolor at this square on Republic and Independence Day. It was the local people who demanded that the square be renamed as Bharat Mata Chowk. After the removal of Section 370 from Jammu and Kashmir, it is the first case of changing the name of a place.
