Japan Launches Easier Visa Process for Indian Tourists: Here's How to Apply Online

Japan has begun issuing eVisas for Indian tourists starting April 1, eliminating the need for physical stickers on passports. Indian travelers planning to visit Japan can now apply for visas online through VFS Global's Japan Visa Application Centre.

The eVisa will be a single-entry short-term stay visa for tourism purposes, allowing a stay of up to 90 days. However, for other purposes, travelers will still need to apply for visas through traditional paper applications at Japanese embassies and consulates.

Instead of receiving a visa sticker in their passport, passengers granted an electronic visa will be required to display a "visa issuance notice" on their electronic device, such as a smartphone or tablet, during airport check-in.

The eVisa facility is now available for citizens of various countries including Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, India, and the United States, among others.

To apply for a Japan eVisa, travelers need to visit the Japan eVisa website and fill out the necessary details. The results of the visa application will be sent to the applicant's registered email address. Visa fees may be required, depending on the case.

During the application process, some applicants may be asked to appear in person for an interview at the Japanese overseas establishment responsible for their place of residence.

To show the "visa issuance notice" at the airport, travelers will be asked to present the notice, which may be provided by their booking agency with a barcode. Travelers will then need to scan the barcode on their mobile phone and set up the information to be displayed. Once done, the notice will appear on the screen with a countdown timer.

This new system streamlines the visa application process, making it more convenient and efficient for Indian tourists planning trips to Japan. By transitioning to eVisas, Japan aims to enhance the travel experience and facilitate smoother entry procedures for visitors.

The eVisa application process involves visiting the designated website, filling out the required information, and awaiting the outcome via email. While some applicants may need to attend an interview at a Japanese embassy or consulate, the overall process promises greater accessibility and simplicity.

Furthermore, the implementation of electronic visa issuance aligns with global trends in digitalization and travel facilitation. It reflects Japan's commitment to modernizing its immigration procedures while ensuring security and compliance with international standards.

Overall, the introduction of eVisas for Indian tourists marks a significant step forward in enhancing bilateral tourism between Japan and India. It opens up new opportunities for cultural exchange, business collaboration, and mutual understanding, ultimately fostering stronger ties between the two nations.
