New Delhi: Today is the birthday of Jayanta Mohapatra, he is an Indian English poet on October 22, 1928. He is the first Indian poet to win the Sahitya Akademi Award for English poetry. He is the author of poems such as Indian Summer and Hunger, which are placed in the category of classics in modern Indian English literature. He was also awarded the Padma Shri, India's fourth highest civilian honour, in 2009. He returned the award in 2015 in protest against growing intolerance in India.    

Mohapatra was part of a trio of poets who laid the foundation of Indian English poetry. She shared a special bond with AK Ramanujan. Mohapatra also had a good relationship with R Parthasarathy. Over time, he succeeded in creating a quiet, quiet poetic voice of his own, which was different from that of his contemporaries. In 1981, Jayanta Mohapatra received the Sahitya Akademi Award for his book "Relationships".

He is also the recipient of the Jacob Glatstein Memorial Award awarded by Poetry magazine, Chicago. He was also awarded the Alan Tate Poetry Award for 2009 from The Seventy Review. He received the SAARC Sahitya Puraskar, New Delhi, in 2009. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 2009 and an honorary doctorate by Renshaw University on 2 May 2009. He was also awarded the Doctor of Letters.
