Patna: The Janata Dal (U), which has called an emergency national executive meet in New Delhi on Saturday, might witness a change of guard in the party organization. The Senior Janata Dal-United MP Rajiv Singh 'Lalan' Singh is expected to be made the new national president of the party, a source said.

“With the party looking to invest in the leadership of Upendra Kushwaha, he looks a natural choice. But (Bihar Chief Minister) Nitish Kumar may put that move on hold for now… This is where Lalan Singh stands a fair chance,” a source said.  Lalan Singh has been a close aide of Nitish Kumar for several years and played an important role in building the party.

During the recent cabinet development of the Narendra Modi government, the party had authorized current National President R.C.P. Singh to take decisions on its behalf. Singh, however, just ensured his own inclusion and sources said that this was against the wish of Nitish Kumar who wanted two cabinet berths, for him, and Lalan Singh.
