New Delhi: Despite the Union Health Ministry advising states to keep vaccine wastage below 1 per cent, states like Jharkhand have been wasted 37.3 per cent of vaccine. Chhattisgarh is the second state to record more than 30.2% vaccine wastage. In Tamil Nadu, 15.5 per cent vaccine wastage, 10.8 per cent in Jammu and Kashmir and 10.7 per cent in Madhya Pradesh have been wasted.  The Congress, which has been constantly questioning the shortage of vaccines, is in power in Chhattisgarh, while Jharkhand is an ally in power.

According to media reports, Haryana topped the list two weeks ago for 6 per cent wastage of covicshield and 10 per cent dose of covaxin. However, Haryana Additional Chief Secretary Rajiv Arora said that it has come down to 3.1% and 2.4% respectively in the state. Wastage of vaccine is inevitable in all vaccination programmes. However, efforts should be made to reduce wastage. Vaccines can be wasted on transport, storage and even vaccination centres.

Corona vaccine is supplied in 10 multi dose vials. There is a possibility that some bottles may break during management. Also, if a 10 dose pack is opened and all doses are not used, the rest becomes useless. It has been one of the biggest factors to vaccine wastage.
