Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on September 5 won a confidence motion in the Jharkhand Assembly, with 4 dozen members in the 81-seated Assembly voting in favour of it.

While tabling the motion, the Chief Minister claimed that Opposition BJP’s attempt to poach MLAs prompted the move. The BJP walked out ahead of voting.

"The opposition has undermined democracy... the BJP has been engaging in lawmaker horse trading... In the Assembly,  Soren declared, "We will demonstrate our strength in the House. "People buy goods from the market, but the BJP buys lawmakers," he said.

Soren   also asserted that his Assam counterpart, Himanta Biswa Sarma, had engaged in the "buying" of MLAs from Jharkhand. Members of the opposition poured into the House well while yelling signs. Following a plea by the BJP seeking his disqualification as an MLA in an office-of-profit issue, Mr. Soren's future as Chief Minister is in doubt.
On August 25, the Election Commission (EC) informed Governor Ramesh Bais of their position in this matter, resulting in a political crisis in the State.

There is a rumour that the poll panel recommended the CM be disqualified from serving as an MLA, even though the EC's decision has not yet been made official.

In accordance with a letter the Assembly Secretariat had written to MLAs,  Soren then indicated that he was prepared to introduce a motion of confidence to demonstrate his majority.

Mentioning that struggles are being presented before the state government, he said the onus of poaching Congress MLAs, who were caught in Bengal with a huge amount of cash, lies with Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
