Ranchi: Jharkhand has passed a bill on Friday with 10 per cent reservation for the common man of the poor in the Assembly. The Jharkhand Assembly today gave its nod to the 'Reservation Amendment In Jharkhand Posts and Vacancies of Services Act, 2019', which provides 10 per cent reservation in the services of the Jharkhand government to the economically backward citizens of the general category in accordance with the policy of the Central Government.

The bill was passed by voice vote in the state assembly this afternoon amid a boycott by the main opposition Jharkhand Mukti Morcha. Congress opposed the Bill saying that three per cent of the total people in the state are general people and therefore, the provision of 10 per cent reservation is unfair for them.

Former State Congress President and MLA from Lohardaga, Sukhdev Bhagat, while introducing an amendment in the House, said that reservation for backward classes should be increased first in the state as they are 53 per cent in the state. He claimed that there are only three per cent of the general category in the state and therefore it is unfair to give them 10 per cent reservation on economic grounds. The House later approved the bill by voice vote. However, the State Government had introduced the provision of reservation for ten per cent of the poor people of the general category from the State Order only on 16th January.
