Former MD of Tata Steel JJ Irani passes away

Jamshedpur: Former Managing Director (MD) of Tata Steel Dr Jamshed J Irani passed away at 10 pm on Monday. He breathed his last at Tata Main Hospital (TMH). He was 86 years old. He was running ill after falling in the bathroom of the house the previous day. He had a head injury. 15 days ago he was admitted to TMH for treatment. He was admitted to CCU-3 of the hospital. His health suddenly deteriorated on Monday evening. Corona got infected during the course of treatment. 

However, after a few days, he became free from this infection. His health had deteriorated at the time of the infection but had recovered from it. Due to the death of Dr Irani, there has been a wave of mourning in the entire industry including the city of Loha. On hearing the news of his demise, Tata Steel's General Manager Medical Services Dr Sudhir Rai, RMO Rinku Bhargava and other senior officers reached TMH. After that, till late at night, the company's officers continued to come here.

He completed his Bachelor of Science degree from Science College, Nagpur in 1956 and a Master of Science degree in Geology from Nagpur University in 1958. He completed his Masters in Metallurgy in 1960 and PhD in 1963 from the University of Sheffield, England. He joined the British Iron and Steel Research Association in 1963 as a Senior Scientific Officer in Sheffield. He was promoted to head of the Physical Metallurgy Division there. He retired from Tata Steel in 2001.
