New Delhi: England, batting in the first match of the Test series, has scored 254 runs, losing 4 wickets till tea time on the second day. England Team captain Joe Root has scored a double century while batting brilliantly. He has scored 203 runs from 353 balls, which are still frozen at the crease. Oli Pope is unbeaten on 24 off 73 balls with the help of two fours. So far 67 runs have been shared between the two batsmen for the fifth wicket. England scored 99 after losing one wicket in the second session on the second day.

For India, Bumrah got two and Ashwin and Shahbaz Nadeem, playing his debut test, got one wicket. England started the day after lunch by 355 runs for three wickets. Root started the innings with 156 and Ben Stokes put their innings ahead by 63 runs. Root and Stokes shared a 124-run partnership for the fourth wicket. This partnership, which was becoming difficult for India, broke Nadeem by catching Stokes at the hands of Cheteshwar Pujara. Stokes added 19 runs in his innings and was dismissed as the fourth batsman on the team's score of 387. Stokes scored 82 runs off 118 balls with the help of 10 fours and two sixes.

After Stokes' dismissal, Pope, did not allow England to suffer any more setbacks until tea time. Root completed his double century before tea. He completed his double century by hitting a six off Ashwin. Root became the first English batsman to complete his double century by hitting a six. This is Root's third double out of England and his second century in the last three Tests.
