New Delhi: News of the International Court of Justice Dalveer Bhandari becoming the Chief Justice of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) went viral on Tuesday. Soon, there were compliments on social media platforms. The congratulations reached his family in the US and Delhi. They were upset as they acknowledged. In fact, someone had recycled Bhandari's message of being elected a judge in ICJ and made the message of being elected chief justice viral. Justice Bhandari was present in Jodhpur on Tuesday.

When this viral claim was investigated, it turned out to be fake. Justice Bhandari left for the national capital Delhi on Tuesday afternoon. The message went viral on social media on Tuesday morning, "Justice Dalveer Bhandari (Jodhpur) was elected chief justice of the International Court of Justice for the next nine years. He secured 183 out of 193 votes. Great Britain had been in this position for 71 years. A moment of pride for India...'' Some close to Judge Dalveer Bhandari were also taken aback by the viral message. However, it has become clear that this viral claim is completely fake and has nothing to do with reality. The International Court of Justice does not have a Chief Justice (CJ) but is called the Chairman, or Speaker.

Justice Bhandari was first elected as a judge of the ICJ on April 27, 2012. He was elected for the second time in November 2017 and will continue as justice till 2026. Bhandari and Britain's Christopher Greenwood were contesting for the second time, but Britain withdrew from the election. As a result, Justice Bhandari got the votes of 183 members out of a total of 193 members in the General Assembly.  In fact, this post was from 2017, when he was re-elected, which is now going viral.  However, the Chief Justice mentioned in the viral post is completely baseless.
