Justice Dipak Misra is an Indian jurist who served as the 45th Chief Justice of India from 28 August 2017 till 2 October 2018.   He was born on 3 October 1953).

Also the former Chief Justice presided over the high courts in Patna and Delhi. He is Justice Ranganath Misra's nephew, who served as the 21st Chief Justice between 1990 and 1991. He took over as Chief Justice in place of J. S. Khehar.

On February 14, 1977, Misra registered in the bar and began practising at the Orissa High Court and the Service Tribunal. In 1996, he received his initial appointment as an Additional Judge of the Orissa High Court. He was moved to the Madhya Pradesh High Court the following year, where he was appointed a Permanent Judge on December 19, 1997. 

He was named Chief Justice of the Patna High Court in December 2009, a position he held until May 2010, when he was named Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court. On October 10, 2011, he was given a promotion to the Supreme Court.

After being named the 45th Chief Justice of India on August 28, 2017, Justice Misra served as chief justice of the Supreme Court for thirteen months until his required retirement at the age of 65 on October 2, 2018, when he was succeeded by Ranjan Gogoi.

Justice Dipak Misra had upheld the constitutionality of the criminal defamation as a reasonable restriction on free speech under Article 19 (2) of the Constitution stating that reputation cannot be allowed to be sullied on the anvil of free speech which is not absolute.
