Centre responds to SC on promotion of Justice Akil Qureshi

NEW DELHI: The Centre has submitted its reply to the Supreme Court regarding the appointment of Bombay High Court Justice Akil Qureshi as Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court. According to Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, the collegium will now decide the issue.

According to sources, the report submitted by the Union Law Ministry on Wednesday did not object to the promotion of the present Bombay High Court Judge Justice Qureshi. It says that he may be considered to be the Chief Justice of another High Court instead of Madhya Pradesh. However, the ministry has not given any reason behind the decision. On Wednesday, a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi had said that the Supreme Court has received information from the government in this regard.

It will be placed before the Collegium under the prescribed procedure on which he can take cognizance. The bench also deferred the hearing on a plea filed by the Gujarat High Court Bar Association seeking directions to the Centre to notify the promotion of Justice Qureshi. The Supreme Court collegium had on May 10 recommended Justice Qureshi to be a judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court, but the government did not make a decision on it. On the same day, the Centre notified the recommendation for appointment of Justice D.N. Patel for the post of Chief Justice of Delhi High Court.
