KATHMANDU: Former Nepal Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli was re-elected as Chairman of the Nepal Communist Party-UML on Tuesday, defeating veteran party leader Bhim Bahadur Rawal by a landslide margin.

The party's 10th national Congress is now taking place to elect a new leadership, with Oli imposing his choice on the nomination of a new leadership without vote. On Sunday, he read out the list of party office bearers and the central committee as former party Chairman.

However, a group of party officials objected to Oli's unilateral decision to designate the party's office-bearers and Central Committee members, and sought elections despite knowing they would lose. Oli agreed to run for elections after party leaders expressed severe reservations about his activities. The new Central Committee was elected by a vote of 2,175 representatives from throughout the country.

According to Rajan Bhattarai, the CPN-UML leader, Oli received 1,840 votes while his opponent, Rawal, received only 223 votes in the election, which is expected to be declared by Tuesday evening.
