According to the Hindu calendar, every month, the eighth day of the waning moon phase (Krishna Paksha) is celebrated as Kalashtami because it marks the appearance of Kal Bhairava. Worship on this day is considered highly auspicious as Kal Bhairava is revered as an intense manifestation of Lord Shiva, known for conquering fear.

Timing of Kal Bhairava Puja

As per the Shiv Purana, Kal Bhairava manifested during the twilight period (Pradosh Kaal), signifying the convergence of day and night. This time is believed to be propitious for Kal Bhairava's worship, appeasing him greatly. Tantric rituals specify performing the worship during the night, ensuring it aligns with specific auspicious moments (muhurta), often on Saturdays or Sundays.

Forms of Baba Bhairava

The Skanda Purana lists eight forms of Bhairava, with Kal Bhairava being the third. Each form is associated with unique attributes and duties: Ruru Bhairava, Samhara Bhairava, Kaal Bhairava, Asitanga Bhairava, Krodha Bhairava, Bhishana Bhairava, Maha Bhairava, and Khatvang Bhairava.

Siddhis Associated with Bhairava

The worship of Kal Bhairava is categorized into Rajasic and Tamasic forms, each involving distinct rituals. Tamasic rituals, involving mantras and fire offerings, are performed at night and may attract spiritual entities. Hence, householders are advised to perform the more benign form of worship.

How to Appease Kal Bhairava

For general worship, chanting his mantras and reciting Bhairavastak is recommended. On Saturdays, prepare bitter gram flour fritters (pakoras) cooked in oil and feed them to a dog, believed to please Kal Bhairava. Offerings like jalebi, imarti, and malpua are also customary. Burn incense made from Indian bdellium gum (guggul) on Sundays or Saturdays, spreading its smoke throughout the house for purification. Kal Bhairava's worship holds deep significance in Hindu traditions, offering devotees protection from various fears and adversities. Understanding the rituals and timing enhances the effectiveness of the worship, ensuring adherence to sacred practices.
