Amid the rise in the number of people fleeing Afghanistan rises, a United States general confirmed that Kabul's airport reopened early Tuesday after being closed for hours. The airport was earlier closed by the US forces following a breakdown in security on the airstrip which then interrupted evacuation operations. The US on Monday resumed temporarily suspended operations at the airfield after clearing crowds off the runways, said Pentagon. The operations restarted while President Joe Biden was addressing the nation about the sitations in Afghanistan. Biden was briefed by his national security team about the situation and then flew from Camp David to Washington to prepare to address the nation as the Taliban solidified their control of the country, reported CNN.
Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said there had been two security incidents at the airfield at Hamid Karzai International Airport "involving armed individuals shooting at US forces." "In two separate incidents, US forces responded to hostile threats, and that resulted in the death of two armed individuals," Kirby said during a briefing.
