KOLKATA: West Bengal Governor C. Ananda Bose has sought a report from the Kolkata police in the Kaliyaganj violence which broke out on Arpil 25 after clashes between police forces and locals agitating over the rape and murder of a minor girl.

Sources said that the Government intends to  review in detail the police report on this count and as per which  take appropriate action or give directions, in line with provisions.

On April 25, parts of Kaliyaganj in North Dinajpur district turned into a virtual battlefield with a police station being set on fire and a number of police vehicles torched. Many police personnel were arrested in this connection.

Before the violence could subside, tension increased in response to Suvendu Adhikari, the opposition leader in the West Bengal assembly, alleging that a 33-year-old Rajbanshi youth and BJP activist was killed by police gunfire. The police report in this case has also been requested by the governor.

On Wednesday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee asserted that the riots in Kaliyaganj on Tuesday were caused by BJP-backed goons who had travelled from nearby Bihar. The chief minister added that she had ordered the police to pursue the perpetrators of violence with vigour.

Political analysts believe that the Governor's request for a thorough police report on this issue could spark new disputes between the Governor House and the State Secretariat.
