Chicago: In a powerful speech at the Democratic National Convention, Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her support for a ceasefire in Israel, while voicing deep concern over the ongoing suffering in Gaza. As the conflict between Israel and Hamas continues, Harris emphasized that both she and President Joe Biden are working tirelessly to end the humanitarian crisis.
"We must act now to bring about a ceasefire," Harris stated, acknowledging the "devastating" loss of innocent lives in Gaza. "The suffering we have witnessed over the past 10 months is truly heartbreaking. Innocent civilians have been caught in the crossfire, and countless families are fleeing for their lives. This level of human suffering must end."
While emphasizing her support for peace, Harris made it clear that Israel's right to defend itself remains non-negotiable. "I will always stand by Israel's right to protect its people. No one should ever experience the horrors inflicted by Hamas, including the violence we saw on October 7. The people of Israel must have the means to defend themselves against such terror," Harris said.
President Biden has also been actively engaged in discussions with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. On August 21, the two leaders discussed the importance of finalizing a ceasefire deal and releasing hostages, focusing on eliminating threats from Hamas and other hostile groups. Biden reiterated the urgency of the ongoing peace talks and upcoming negotiations in Cairo aimed at overcoming the remaining obstacles to a ceasefire.
In previous diplomatic efforts, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken met with Israeli officials and proposed a "bridging agreement" to facilitate a ceasefire. Israel has since accepted the proposal, with further negotiations expected to take place.
Harris' address at the Democratic National Convention extended beyond the conflict in the Middle East. She used the occasion to reflect on her personal journey, speaking about her upbringing in California by her Indian immigrant mother, Shyamala Gopalan. Harris shared her determination to represent "all Americans" and promised to push forward with important legislative measures, including a bipartisan border security bill and the protection of reproductive rights.
In a pointed criticism of former President Donald Trump, Harris warned against the dangers of returning him to office, especially after recent legal developments. "Imagine a presidency with no guardrails," she said. "He will wield power not for the good of the people, but for himself."
Concluding her speech, Harris formally accepted the nomination to run for President of the United States, vowing to lead the country forward with integrity and a commitment to justice.
