CHICAGO: The third day of the Democratic National Convention took on a spiritual dimension with a unique opening led by Pandit Rakesh Bhatt, a renowned Hindu priest. Held at the United Center, the event marked a significant moment as Bhatt began with a traditional Vedic prayer invoking the ancient Indian principle of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam,' meaning 'the whole world is one family.'

Pandit Bhatt’s prayer, chanted in Sanskrit and translated into English, resonated through the hall. “Even if we have differences, when it comes to the nation, we have to be united,” Bhatt said. “Let our minds think together. Let our hearts beat as one. All for the betterment of society. May this make us powerful so we can unite and make our nation proud.”

A Call for Unity and Inclusivity

Bhatt’s prayer was delivered just after the convention’s official opening. It focused on themes of unity, peace, and justice, setting a tone of togetherness among the delegates. Following the prayer, the national anthem was sung, emphasizing the collective spirit of the gathering.

A Brief Biography of Pandit Bhatt

A native of Bengaluru, Pandit Bhatt hails from a traditional Madhwa Brahmin family and was trained under Guru Sri Pejavar Swamiji of Udupi Ashta Matha. He has studied Tantrasaara (Maadhva) Agama and the Rig Veda. Bhatt holds degrees in Sanskrit, English, and Kannada from Jayachamarajendra College and Osteen College in Bengaluru. His linguistic proficiency spans Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, English, Tulu, and Sanskrit.

Currently serving as a priest at the Sri Siva Vishnu Temple in Maryland, Bhatt has previously worked at Udupi Ashta Matha and held positions at Salem Raghavendra Swami Koil and Badrinath. His extensive background in religious rituals and languages makes him a respected figure in both Indian and American Hindu communities.

Ajay Bhutoria, Deputy National Finance Chair of the Democratic Party, praised Bhatt’s prayer, noting its significance in highlighting the party’s dedication to inclusivity and diversity. “Rakesh Bhatt's Hindu prayer at the DNC today is a significant moment,” Bhutoria said. “It reflects the growing influence and recognition of our community within American society.”

New Jersey Senator Cory Booker spoke about the convention’s focus on freedom and paid tribute to the late Representative Bill Pascrell Jr. “We are sad for his loss but we celebrate his life,” Booker remarked.
