Former Alumni Association president Kanhaiya Kumar was detained at Jawaharlal Nehru University in Bithiharwa Ashram in Bettiah district of Bihar. After which he was released. Kanhaiya tweeted that "Bowing to the peaceful sit-in demonstration at the Gandhi-Ashram (Champaran), the administration has canceled the detention order and a month-long protest against the CAA-NRC-NPR. Jan-Gan-Man Yatra has started as per its schedule. Today, public meetings will be organized in Bettiah and Motihari."

According to the media report, Kanhaiya was about to start the 'Save the Constitution - Save Citizenship' journey at the Bhitiharwa Ashram. The journey was to start from Bapudham in West Champaran and end at Gandhi Maidan in Patna on 29 February. On the same day, the Maharally was to be held at Gandhi Maidan in protest against the CAA-NRC and NPR. CPI leader Kanhaiya was scheduled to address a gathering at the start of the yatra, but the SDM of West Champaran says that Kanhaiya was not allowed to have a public meeting. The former student of JNU was also not allowed by the DM. He had reached Bettiah to start the journey from where he was taken into custody.
