Sexual assault case: Sri Murugha Mutt chief priest sent to 14-day custody

Bangalore: The Karnataka Police on Thursday (September 1) arrested Sri Murugha Mutt chief priest Shivamurthy Muruga Sharanaru for allegedly sexually assaulting two minor girls. After his arrest late on Thursday night, he was taken to the government hospital in Chitradurga for a medical test. Pujari was then sent to 14-day judicial custody.

Karnataka's Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) of Law and Order Alok Kumar has said that Sri Murugha Mutt chief priest Shivamurthy Muruga Sharanaru, accused of sexually assaulting minors, has been arrested. The ADGP has said that the prescribed procedure is being followed. Further action will be taken as per the medical test and investigation process. He said he would also be produced before the judge. Earlier on Tuesday, the district sessions court in Chitradurga had deferred the anticipatory bail plea of the chief priest of Murugha Mutt till September 1.

According to the report, an FIR was registered under the POCSO Act against the priest of the influential Muruga Mutt in Chitradurga after the minor girl alleged sexual assault. An FIR has been registered against Shivamurthy Murugha Sharanaru of Murugha Mutt in Chitradurga. According to the FIR, the girls were sexually abused for more than two years.
