BANGALORE: Ahead of the Karnataka Assembly poll 2023, the BJP on April 11 released its first list of 189 candidates. The party has fielded 52 new candidates and retained 90 sitting MLAs including 11 from Congress and Janata Dal (S) who crossed over in 2019 to help it wrest power from the coalition.

The saffron party has introduced 12 fresh faces for the seats won by its MLAs in 2018, including B Y Vijayendra, the son of former Karnataka chief minister B S Yediyurappa. The son of Yediyurappa will run from the Shikaripura seat.

Siddharth Singh, a son of Legislator Anand Singh, will also run from his Vijayanagara district. In 2019, Anand Singh left the Congress. Umesh Katti's son Nikhil has been chosen to take over his Hukkeri seat after Umesh Katti passed away last year.

Basvaraj Bommai, the chief minister, will run once more from his home district of Shiggaon.

In Kanakapura and Varuna, respectively, the BJP pitted R Ashoka and V Somanna against D K Shivakumar and Siddaramaiah, two veterans of the Congress party.

Arun Singh, the national general secretary of the BJP, announced during a press conference that 52 new candidates, eight women, nine physicians, five lawyers, one retired IPS officer, three retired public servants, and eight social activists had been awarded tickets.

Tickets have been distributed to state ministers Shashikala Jolai, R Ashok, Prabho Chauhan, Shankar Muniyakappa, Muniratna, ST Somashekar, VC Patil, Varity Vasuraj, Murgesh Nirani, CC Patil, Sunil Kumar, and Shivram Hebbar.

Vishwaser Hegde, speaker of the state assembly, has been handed the nomination. In this list, tickets have been given to Vokkalinga-41, Lingayat-51, Kurba-7, SC-30, ST-16 and 32 from the OBC community.

The Karnataka assembly elections will take place on May 10 in a single phase, and the results will be tallied on May 13.
