Bangalore: Congress has won the Karnataka assembly elections with a thumping majority. Polling was held on May 10 in all the assembly seats in the state. Today, on Saturday (May 13) from 8 am, the counting of votes has started in all the assembly seats of the state. Karnataka's Varuna assembly seat is one of the hottest seats in the state, where former Chief Minister of the state and veteran Congress leader Siddaramaiah was in the fray.
Veteran Congress leader Siddaramaiah won the Varuna assembly seat with 63,507 votes. He was up against BJP candidate KV Somana. Somna came second with 37,890 votes. On the other hand, Dr. Bharti Shankar NL of Janata Dal Secular (JDS) got only 756 votes. Congress's Siddaramaiah was leading with 38,731 votes at 12.32 pm, according to the Election Commission's website. Whereas, BJP's V. Somana was second with 22,816 votes.
A party or alliance needs to win 113 seats to get a majority in the 224-member Karnataka Assembly. Political pundits have predicted an edge for the Congress in a tough fight with the BJP. Many have predicted a hung assembly. In such a situation, HD Kumaraswamy's JDS can become the kingmaker. A record 73.19 per cent votes were cast in the elections held on May 10 in Karnataka. This was the highest turnout in Karnataka after the formation of states on linguistic basis in 1957.
