BELAGAVI:  The Forest Department and authorities of Karnataka's Belagavi district have launched a mega operation to catch a leopard that was seen prowling in a residential area and had also attacked a construction laborer.

The operation now has more than 200 personnel from the department and the police, together with wildlife, anaesthesia specialists, and district administration. To capture the leopard, the officials are considering roping in two elephants from Sakrebailu Elephant Camp.

The Belagavi Golf Club, which is in the centre of the city, has seen the leopard wandering around its grounds. The leopard surfaced on Monday during a search operation in the city, but it managed to get away and vanish before the personnel could set up a trap with a specially made net.

Pug prints have been discovered by the police all throughout the city. 22 schools have been closed for 18 days as a safety precaution. Residents, especially parents and kids, have experienced extreme stress and tension as a result of the leopard's movement.

In a similar incident, earlier on Augut 4, Karnataka Forest Department sleuths have undertaken an operation to catch leopards prowling in Heggadadevanakote town in Mysuru district, creating fear and panic among residents. The people explain said that the leopards enter residential areas and have been attacking livestock and dogs for 2 months. People are scared to come out of their houses when it is dark and in the morning.
