Bangalore: In a landmark order in the case relating to the Guru Dattatreya Peeth-Baba Budangiri Dargah dispute in Chikmagalur district of Karnataka, the Karnataka High Court on Tuesday (September 28, 2021) quashed the government's order dated March 19, 2018, in which only one Mujawar (the Muslim fakir who offers the dargah) to offer flowers to Swami Guru Dattatreya, was appointed to perform Pada puja and light 'Nanda Deep.' It may be mentioned that 'Shri Guru Dattatreya Swami Peeth' is also known as 'Shri Guru Dattatreya Baba Budnaswamy Dargah.'

Given that the Congress government's order in 2018 at Sri Guru Dattatreya Swami and Baba Budangiri Dargah in Chikmagalur violates the rights of both Hindus and Muslims, the Karnataka High Court quashed the government order which authorized Mujawar appointed only to perform religious rituals of both religions prescribed by Shah Khadri. The high court further said that the state government's order was a violation of religious rights granted to both communities (Hindus and Muslims) under Article 25 of the Constitution. Justice PS Dinesh Kumar said that the government order allows only one Mujawar to enter the sanctum sanctorum of the cave and distribute 'Tirtha' (Charanamrit) to both Hindus and Muslims.

The BJP praised the Karnataka High Court's order ordering the state government to appoint a Hindu priest in the Cave Temple Swami Dattatreya Peeth in Baba Budangiri mountains of Chikmagalur. BJP National General Secretary and MLA from Chikmagalur, CT Ravi tweeted to express happiness over the decision and slammed the then Siddaramaiah-led Congress government for the injustice done to Hindus during his rule in the state.
