Bangalore: Hijab in Karnataka Amidst the ongoing burqa controversy, a case of a Sikh student being asked to take off her turban has come to light. The case pertains to Mount Carmel PU College in Bengaluru. According to reports, the college administration, citing the high court order, had first asked the Sikh student to take off her turban on February 16, 2022. It is being told that the college administration had no problem with the Sikh student wearing a turban, but they had to take this step due to the opposition of Muslim girl students supporting the hijab.

According to the report, the Sikh student who was asked to take off the turban is also the president of the student organisation. The girl's family has now demanded a direction from the Karnataka government and the High Court. The name of the student's father is Gurcharan Singh, who is a senior officer in the IT company. He has flatly refused to remove the turban. Speaking to the media, he said, "My daughter has not faced any bias in college so far. But after the High Court's order, the situation is now odd. The court order does not mention Sikh turbans anywhere. We are in touch with the Sikh community and lawyers in this matter. We have also demanded the college administration to allow the daughter to study with a turban. '

The college administration has met the student and her family members in this case and cited the directions of the High Court. A spokesperson for the college said, "We had informed all the students about the court's order on February 16 itself. After that, the activities were normal. On Tuesday, the deputy director of pre-university education (north) came to the college. There was a group of girls wearing hijab standing there. He called all the girls to the office and apprised them of the high court's order. '

The college spokesperson said, "We had no objection to the Sikh student wearing a turban. But the girls with hijab objected to the Sikh girl wearing a turban. They opposed any religious symbol of any student. In such a situation, we spoke to the student's father on the phone and sent him a mail. The Sikh student's father described the turban as an integral part of his life, but when the other girls told everyone about the same rule, we made them aware of it. According to deputy director G Sriram, "We should not allow this matter to go any further. The order of the High Court will be followed. The girls are now convinced. Nobody has a problem.''
