HAVERI: The family of Karnataka student Naveen Shekarappa Gyanagoudar, who died in war-torn Ukraine, has opted to give his body to a state medical college.

Basavaraj Bommai, the Chief Minister, has declared that the body of Naveen will arrive at Bengaluru International Airport early on Monday.

Shekarappa, the father of the killed student, expressed sadness on Friday at the delay in returning his son's body. Now, the sadness has gone away after knowing that we will be able to see his body for the last time," he said. He said the body would arrive in Chalageri village on Monday. The family has opted to donate the body to the S.S. Medical College in Davanagere after conducting the final rites, he added. He said that the decision was made to assist medical college students with their studies. He also expressed gratitude to everyone for reuniting him with his son's body after 21 days. 

Vijayalakshmi, Naveen's mother, has also expressed gratitude to authorities for returning her son's body, stating that it has brought her some peace.

On March 1, Naveen was killed in Kharkiv city as he emerged from a bunker in quest of food. The state government compensated his family with more than Rs 25 lakh.
