AHMEDABAD: Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on promised auto-rickshaw drivers in Gujarat on Monday that he would bring Regional Transport Office (RTO) services to their homes in an effort to combat corruption and protect them from abuse.
The national convener of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) was speaking to a group of auto-rickshaw drivers in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, where the Assembly elections are scheduled for later this year.
Kejriwal emphasised the importance of the auto-rickshaw drivers in his victory in the Delhi elections and urged them to continue doing so by promoting the AAP to their customers and on social media. He said that during the COVID-19 lockdown, his government in Delhi gave each of roughly 1.5 lakh drivers Rs 5,000 twice.
The Regional Transport Office (RTO) is not necessary in Delhi for tasks such a licence renewal, change of ownership, permit, or hypothecation. A phone number has been provided. A Delhi government official will show up at your home after you make a call. The same way you order a pizza over the phone, you will renew your licence, he continued.
Kejriwal said this will stop bribery. The money is given as a bribe to government officials and policemen will be saved. ''You will not be required to pay any bribe. But for that you will have to form AAP's government,'' Kejriwal said.
At the event, some of the auto-rickshaw drivers complained that police had harassed them in violation of Indian Penal Code Section 188. (disobedience to order duly promulgated by public servant).
"The Section 188) was also utilised for harassment in Delhi," Kejriwal claimed. I understand the purpose of Section 188. Whether or not someone was accused, they would fabricate cases. They would treat them like murderers. I released them from (Section) 188, and in Gujarat I'll do the same. If the AAP wins the Gujarat election, he claimed that the free, high-quality healthcare and education facilities it has promised will also benefit the auto-rickshaw drivers. He went on to say that the free electricity up to 300 units promised by the party will also help auto-rickshaw drivers save money and cope with inflation.
