Kerala announces Rs10 Cr For support in Earthquake-Hit Turkey, Syria

KERALA: At the  Kerala State Assembly, Finance Minister KN Balagopal made the announcement that the state government would contribute Rs 10 crore to humanitarian efforts in Turkey and Syria. A resolution honouring the citizens of Turkey and Syria was tabled in the Assembly at the same time by Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Under the banner of "Operation Dost," India swiftly responded after devastating Cstruck Turkey and Syria. It sent rescue teams and supplies. In a similar vein, Kerala became the first individual state on Wednesday to declare Rs 10 crore for aid to earthquake-stricken areas in Turkey and Syria.

The latest current data from AFP states that as of Wednesday, there were around 11,200 fatalities in the earthquake-stricken countries of Turkey and Syria. A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team, meanwhile, left for Turkey on Tuesday to assist with relief and rescue efforts in the nation where thousands of people have died after being shaken by an earthquake of magnitude 7.8, officials said  This is part of the humanitarian help and disaster relief measures announced by the Indian government on Monday for the earthquake-hit Turkey and neighbouring areas, the officer said.

A National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) officer said that a total of 101 people from two teams headquartered in Ghaziabad, close to Delhi, and Kolkata, along with equipment, have boarded an Indian Air Force (IAF) C-17 aircraft towards Turkey.

The teams will help rescue people trapped under the collapsed structures and render all helps as required by the local authorities there, he said. The team also includes women rescuers.

The NDRF has previously participated in two of these worldwide operations: the 2015 Nepal earthquake and the triple calamity that struck Japan in 2011 (earthquake, tsunami, and nuclear meltdown).

As directed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government resolved to send NDRF teams, medical supplies, and relief supplies to Turkey as soon as possible on Monday.

More than 4,000 people were killed and thousands of houses were destroyed in Turkey and neighbouring Syria on Monday due to an earthquake. It originated in the Kahramanmaras area of southeast Turkey and was felt as far away as Cairo.
