The political upheaval has intensified due to the elections in the country right now, due to the assembly election campaign in Kerala, a separate controversy arose after a constituent of the ruling LDF commented on the matter of converting religion on the pretext of marriage. Kerala Congress (M) leader Jose K. Mani's statement has been supported by the Kerala Catholic Bishops Council and said that 'Love Jihad is a reality in the state'. On this, state BJP chief K.K. Surendran said that Mani's statement has proved that the issue being raised by the Bharatiya Janata Party is not wrong.

On the same Tuesday, Surendran said, "Not only BJP and Hindus, but the Christian community also feels that love jihad is a serious matter in Kerala. There have been many such cases in the state, but they have not been investigated". He added, "ISIS (Islamic State) is targeting Hindu-Christian girls, especially girls. If love is not jihad, then why are they sending couples to Syria? In our manifesto, we have clearly stated that if we come to power, we will enact a law against love jihad".

In fact, Mani, who is contesting from the Christian-dominated Pala assembly seat, raised the issue during a television program on Sunday. In response to a question, he said, "If any such issue comes up, it should be investigated and resolved. Even then, there are many doubts about this among individuals, then it should be studied clearly".However, Mani on Monday pulled back on the issue as he felt that other parties of the LDF, including the CPI and the CPI-M, would not like it.
