Kochi: The Kerala government on Friday ordered to stop all activities related to the National Population Register (NPR) in the state. This order has been taken in view of the apprehension that arose among the people that the National Civil Register (NRC) will be implemented through NPR after the disputed Revised Citizenship Act (CAA).

A statement issued by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) said that the government has decided to postpone the NPR as it is expected that NRC will be implemented through it. CM Pinarayi Vijayan's office said that this step has been taken because NPR does away with constitutional values and the matter is under consideration in the Supreme Court. This decision has been taken by the left government of the state amid protests against the revised citizenship law in different parts of the state.

Earlier, West Bengal also stopped all activities related to the preparation of NPR in the face of increased anger against CAA. According to the order issued by the Principal Secretary (General Administration) of Kerala, among the citizenship amendment law, NPR was expected to result in activities related to NPR among the common people. Considering this, the state government ordered that the process of activities related to the National Population Register should be stopped from now on.
