Kerala: Dheeraj Rajendran, a member of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) was stabbed to death at the Government Engineering College in Idukki on Monday, by a member of the rival Kerala Students Union (KSU). Nikhil Paili, a member of the Youth Congress, is accused of stabbing SFI activist Dheeraj Rajendran, 21. Later, the latter was apprehended by the police. Another five people were apprehended.

Two additional SFI members, Abhijith and Amal, were badly injured and hospitalised as a result of the attack. According to reports, the two organisations' activists clashed during the student body union election, resulting in the murder. SFI is the CPM's student wing, and KSU is the Congress's student wing. For years, SFI has ruled over the college's student union.

In the aftermath of the incident, the vice-chancellor of Kerala Technology University (KTU) has requested the college officials to postpone the student election.

Paili was apprehended on a bus as he attempted to depart the district hours after the incident. According to news accounts, he was pulled up by cops while alone. After a student was killed in campus violence, police initiated a manhunt for the suspects. The attack, according to the college's SFI officials, was carried out by KSU and Youth Congress militants from outside the school.
