Kochi:  Kerala Governor Arif Muhammad Khan requested on January 4 that the government call a special session of the Assembly to relieve him of his Chancellor of Universities duties.

Governor, speaking to reporters in Kochi, denied that his refusal to execute his duties as chancellor had caused an administrative crisis in the universities. "The solution is simple. They [the administration] have the power to convene a special session of the Assembly. They have the power to designate the Chief Minister to the position of chancellor. Otherwise, the government should enact a law to that end. I'll sign it right away ", he explained.

"Something obviously happened," Khan remarked, explaining why he decided not to remain as chancellor. "However, because the topic involves national institutions, I will not discuss it," he stated.

He said: "In what appeared to be a reference to my contentious decision, purportedly at the behest of the government, to endorse the extension of the Kannur University vice-chancellor beyond the retirement age," in what appeared to be a reference to his contentious decision, purportedly at the behest of the government, to endorse the extension of the Kannur University vice-chancellor beyond the retirement age." "During the day, you accomplish something. When you get home, your conscience prickles. You make the decision that I will not continue working for you. Something major has occurred. The principle of constitutional propriety must be observed. And it is for this reason that I refuse to discuss those extremely severe matters in public " he said.
