Thiruvananthapuram:  A living legend and stalwart of Kerala's political landscape, V S Achuthanandan, former Chief Minister and a revered figure in the history of the state's ruling CPI(M), marks his 100th birthday today, October 20, 2023.

Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan, affectionately known as 'Comrade VS' by his ardent followers, played a pivotal role in founding the CPI(M) after the schism from the undivided CPI in 1964.

While the aging leader has retreated from the public and media spotlight due to health concerns, his enduring ideals and unwavering stances on various social and political issues continue to be a topic of conversation, especially as the CPI(M)-led government remains in power in the southern state.

On this momentous day, sources from the party have disclosed that the venerable leader will spend the day with his family at his son Arun Kumar's residence, where well-wishers won't be permitted to greet him directly, keeping his health in mind.

Across party lines, individuals from all walks of life have extended their warm wishes to the Marxist luminary on the occasion of his 100th birthday. Kerala's Governor, Arif Mohammed Khan, conveyed his heartfelt greetings and best wishes to Achuthanandan over the phone, as the Kerala Raj Bhavan revealed.

"My heartiest greetings and best wishes to former Chief Minister Shri #VS Achuthanandan on his 100th birthday. I join the people of Kerala in wishing the beloved and respected people's leader good health and happiness," he expressed in a post.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan remarked that Comrade VS had been an integral part of Kerala's modern history, instrumental in shaping the state into what it is today. He lauded Achuthanandan's remarkable contributions as a people's representative, opposition leader, and chief minister.

CPI(M) state secretary, M V Govindan, also extended his heartfelt wishes to VS on his centenary milestone.

Born on October 20, 1923, into a working-class family in Alappuzha district, Achuthanandan entered the trade union after completing his primary education. His life has been intertwined with the state's Communist movement, from his early involvement in the Punnapra-Vayalar uprising to the clandestine activities of the party after its ban in 1949, following the Calcutta thesis. This journey culminated with the formation of the CPI(M) after the split from the CPI in 1964.

Achuthanandan's ascent in the CPI(M) ranks saw him become a politburo member in 1985. Notably, he led the CPI(M)-led LDF government from 2006 to 2011, triumphing over attempts by his rivals within the party to deny him the opportunity.

After his tenure as Chairman of the Administrative Reforms Commission, he now resides at his son's home in Thiruvananthapuram, an emblem of his enduring legacy in Kerala's political landscape.
