Kolkata: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has reached out to West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, urging her to issue directions ensuring a safe passage for the ongoing 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra' led by Rahul Gandhi. Kharge expressed concerns about potential disruptions by miscreants during the yatra's passage through West Bengal, citing instances of similar issues in neighboring states. The Congress party has faced challenges in obtaining permission for public meetings in West Bengal, with state Congress president Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury attributing the difficulties to school examinations.

In a letter to Mamata Banerjee, Kharge wrote, "You would be aware that some miscreants targeted the current Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra in your neighboring states. This has been done on political instigation, but our cadre faced it bravely." He further added, "Now the yatra is passing through Bengal over the next few days. I have been made aware that again some miscreants may foment trouble for the yatra. I am writing to request you that you may kindly issue appropriate directions to ensure smooth passage to the yatra."

Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury had earlier stated that the Congress was facing obstacles in obtaining permission for public meetings in certain places due to school examinations. The West Bengal administration, however, insisted that administrative decisions are not influenced by political considerations. The 'Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra,' which commenced in Manipur on January 14, entered West Bengal from Assam on Thursday and will resume on January 28 after a two-day break.
