The Khelo India Youth Games 2024 are set to kick off in Tamil Nadu, spanning four cities - Chennai, Coimbatore, Madurai, and Trichy - starting this Friday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Games at Chennai's Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG) is a key event under the Indian government's Khelo India initiative, designed to promote sports at the grassroots level. Fans can catch the action of KIYG 2024 through live streaming and telecast in India.
Running until January 31, the sixth edition of this under-18 multi-sport event follows a team championship format. Individual athletes or teams earn medals, contributing to their state or Union Territory's overall tally. The state or UT with the highest count of gold medals at the event's conclusion is crowned the winner.
With participation from over 5,500 athletes representing 36 states and Union Territories, a total of 933 medals will be up for grabs - 278 gold, 278 silver, and 377 bronze - across 26 different sports at KIYG 2024. Squash makes its debut, and Silambam, an indigenous martial art, will be showcased as a demonstration sport.
Sports featured at Khelo India Youth Games 2024 include Archery, Athletics, Badminton, Basketball, Boxing, Cycling (Road and Track), Fencing, Football, Gatka, Gymnastics, Hockey, Judo, Kabaddi, Kalaripayattu, Kho-kho, Mallakhamb, Shooting, Swimming, Table tennis, Tennis, Thang-ta, Volleyball, Weightlifting, Wrestling, Yogasana, Squash, and Silambam (demo).
While Chennai hosts most events, Trichy will host Gatka and Kho Kho, Madurai will hold Mallakhamb and Kalaripayattu, and Coimbatore will feature basketball and Thang Ta.
Defending champions Maharashtra face competition from Haryana, the only other team to secure the title. Haryana led the medals table in the inaugural 2018 edition, Maharashtra clinched the title in 2019 and 2020, and Haryana reclaimed it in 2022. Tamil Nadu, as the hosts, boast the largest contingent with 559 participants, followed by Maharashtra (415) and Haryana (491).
For those eager to watch the Khelo India Youth Games 2024 live, streaming will be available on the Prasar Bharati Sports YouTube channel, and the event will be telecast on DD Sports TV channel in India.
