Today is the birthday of Dr. Kiran Bedi. Dr. Bedi is the first senior female officer of the Indian Police Service. She is behind creating a new identity of Indian police by successfully carrying out many reformist projects during her tenure. She was born on 9 June 1949 in a Punjabi family in Amritsar. Her father's name is Prakash Lal Peshawaria and mother's name is Prem Lata. The names of her three sisters are Shashi, Rita and Anu. Kiran Bedi and her sisters were very fond of playing tennis since childhood. Kiran Bedi and her sisters, popularly known as 'Peshawar Sisters', showed their skills in several national-level competitions in tennis.

Kiran Bedi has done her initial studies from Amritsar. She was also associated with NCC during college. She completed her graduation (BA Hons in English) from Amritsar in 1968. She was also awarded the NCC Cadet Award. In 1970, she earned a master's degree in political science from Chandigarh. She was also a lecturer of Khalsa College, Amritsar for some time. In 1972, she was elected the first woman IPS officer in the country. On 27 November 2007, he voluntarily retired from the police service.

Kiran Bedi has also been associated with public welfare programs. She actively participated in the work done for de-addiction and rehabilitation, female literacy and other social concerns. In 2011, Kiran Bedi joined the Lokpal movement with social worker Anna Hazare. She contributed to the outline of this movement. Kiran Bedi has received national and international awards including United Nations Award, Ramon Mags Award for her commendable social work and President's Gallantry Award from the President of India.
