The host nation New Zealand were forced to make a change with injured skipper Kane Williamson sitting out and Mark Chapman taking his spot in the team. Lockie Ferguson was also included in the playing XI in place of leg-spinner Ish Sodhi, considering the pace of the wicket. Coming in to bat, New Zealand suffered an early blow with Chris Woakes dismissing in-form opener Colin Munro cheaply. Munro edged an outswinger and the ball went straight to Jos Buttler behind the stumps. He departed for 1. Woakes struck again in his second over dismissing Chapman for 1, who failed to make a mark in the team after being given an opportunity. Ross Taylor was run out for 10 after which Guptill went on to complete his fifty. He departed three balls later after being dismissed by Moeen Ali. Moeen Ali struck again to dismiss Tom Latham. Colin de Grandhomme was run out by Jonny Bairstow for 38. Mitchell Santner completed his maiden fifty and took New Zealand to 223 at the close of the innings. England need 224 to win in 50 overs.

Earlier, England won the toss and elected to bowl first against Kiwis in the second ODI. England were 0-1 in the series. England bowlers restricted New Zealand for 223 runs in 49.4 overs. Kiwis opening batsmen Martin Guptill scores 50 runs, while Mitchell Santner was the top scorer of 63 runs including 6 boundaries and one massive six.
