Snake species became poisonous by Shiva

It is mentioned in the Puranas that earlier the snake species were not poisonous, a phenomenon occurred during the time when Lord Shiva consuming the venom released during the Samudra Manthan. When Lord Shiva had churned the ocean, then poison was released from it and no one was ready to consume it. Lord Shiva protecting this world, consumed poison. When Lord Shiva was taking the poison, only a few drops of it got into the mouth of his snake Vasuki. It is said that since then the snakes had become poisonous.

Why do Vasuki stick around Lord Shiva's neck

The history of the Nag Devta is very ancient. While Sheshnag accepted to serve Lord Vishnu, Vasuki (Lord Shiva's snake) accepted to be the jewel of Lord Shiva. Vasuki was a great devotee of Lord Shiva and devotion to Vasuki pleased Lord Shiva. Vasuki was used as a rope to churn the sea to take out nectar and other valuable things from the sea. Lord Shiva pleased with his devotion gave him the boon of becoming a jewel around his neck. Vasuki accepted it.
