Mahatma Jyotirao Phule was born in 1827 AD in Pune. His mother died after one year. He was raised by a maid. His family had come to Pune from Satara many years ago and started making the work of making flower gems. Therefore, these people engaged in gardener's work were known as 'Phule'. Jyotiba studied Marathi till some time ago, missed studies in the middle and later completed the seventh grade of English at the age of 21. He was married to Savitri Bai in 1840, who later became a famous philanthropist herself. Both husband and wife worked together in the field of Dalit and female education, he was a diligent and a social worker.

Field: He did a lot of work for the welfare of widows and women. He also made a lot of efforts to improve the condition of farmers and their welfare. In order to improve the condition of women and their education, Jyotiba opened a school in 1848. It was the first school in the country for this work. If the teacher could not be found to teach the girls, then he himself made his wife Savitri eligible by doing this work for a few days. The title of Mahatma: Jyotirao established 'Satyashodhak Samaj' in 1873 to provide justice to poor and weak of Aurangpura, Aurangabad, Maharashtra. Seeing his social service, he gave him the title of 'Mahatma' in a huge gathering in Mumbai in 1888 AD. Jyotiba started the marriage ceremony without a Brahmin-priest and it was also recognized by the Mumbai High Court. He was opposed to child marriage and widow marriage. During his lifetime, he also wrote many books - Ghulamgiri, Triti Ratna, Chhatrapati Shivaji, the fortnight of Raja Bhosla, the whip of the farmer, the wealth of the untouchables. Due to the struggle of Mahatma Jyotiba and his organization, the government passed the 'Agriculture Act'. He also wrote several books to bring out the truth of religion, society and traditions.

Degree by the British Government - In 1883, he was honored by the then British Government of India for his great work in providing education to women, by calling him 'honorable teachers of education'.
