Journalism is said to be the fourth pillar of democracy because it is playing an important role in influencing or changing people's views, but it is also to be noted that fair journalism is the strongest of democracy. That is why the International Day of Independence of Journalism is celebrated every year on this day i.e. May 3. Freedom of the press in India is guaranteed by the fundamental right to freedom of expression guaranteed to Indians in Article 19 of the Indian Constitution.

Why is this day celebrated?: The aim of World Press Freedom Day is to increase awareness of the importance of press freedom even more rapidly. At the same time, this day also talks about the commitment to uphold and respect the freedom of expression. The day shows that the media is playing an important role in protecting and restoring the values of democracy. Therefore, governments around the world should also ensure the safety of those associated with journalism.

History of International Journalistic Freedom Day: In the year 1991, UNESCO and the United Nations' Department of Public Information decided to celebrate World Press Freedom Day together. The United Nations General Assembly also declared the day on May 3. The proposal was adopted at the 26th session of the UNESCO General Conference in 1993 and since then it is celebrated on May 3 every year.
