Kolkata: Professor Neena Gupta of the Indian Static Institute (ISI) in Kolkata has been awarded one of the most prestigious mathematics awards, the 2021 DST-ICTP-IMU Ramanujan Award for Young Mathematicians from developing countries. According to the Department of Science and Technology, Neena Gupta's name has been recorded in history as she is the fourth Indian and third woman in the world to receive the award. Most interestingly, three of the four Indians who have been awarded the Ramanujan Award are faculty members of the ISI. Earlier, Sujata Ramadorai in 2006, Amlendu Krishna in 2015, Ritabrata Munshi in 2018 were honoured with the honour.

Before receiving the award, Neena Gupta has also received the 'Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize for Science and Technology' in 2019. He was also awarded the Young Scientist Award by the National Science Academy for solving Zariski cancellation problem in the field of algebra geometry. Information available about Neena shows that she grew up in Kolkata and completed her early education at Khalsa High School. He then received a BSc degree from Betheun College in Maths Honours, then a Masters in Maths from the Indian Static Institute, Phd and then started working as a faculty member there. She says that she realized her love for maths when she was a child and after that she started working on it.

After winning the Ramanujan Award, Neena told the media that she was deeply honoured to receive the honour but it was not enough. As a researcher, he still has a lot of problems to solve. He said the award has inspired him to work harder. Initially, his dream was to get married with a good degree. But when he came to know his interest, he started working on it. The award receives a cash prize of US$ 15,000.
