The international working day for rivers is celebrated on 14 March every year. The 22nd annual International Action Day for Rivers is being celebrated this year. The purpose of the day is to emphasize the importance of rivers and how they can affect people's lives. The theme of the 2020 International Day of Action for Rivers is Women, Water, and Climate Change.

History: According to media reports, in March 1997, Curitiba started the International Water Day for Dams and Rivers and the International Day for Rivers at the first international meeting of people affected by dams in Brazil. It has been learned that representatives of 20 countries nominated 14 March as an observation of the action of International Day, which coincides with the Brazilian Day against large dams.

The day has been designated to raise public voice against destructive water development projects, reclaim the health of our watersheds, and demand for equal and sustainable management of our rivers.
