National Safe Motherhood Day is celebrated every year on April 11 in India for maternity protection of women. This is an initiative of the White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI). For safe motherhood, the Indian government announced in 2003 to celebrate the National Safe Motherhood Day on April 11. It was decided to celebrate it as maximum healthcare should be ensured to women after pregnancy, and delivery so that no woman dies during childbirth or due to childbirth. India's position in the case of the death of mothers due to the birth of a child is getting worse every year.

12% maternal mortality rate in India: More than 45,000 women lose their lives during childbirth every year in  India. That number is about 12% of deaths worldwide. At the time of giving birth in the country, 167 out of every 1,00,000 women die. However, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare says that the maternal mortality rate in India is declining rapidly. The country has succeeded in reducing the maternal mortality rate by more than 65 per cent as compared to the global achievement of 47 per cent in the period 1990 to 2011-13.

History of National Safe Motherhood Day: The Government of India, at the request of the White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI), a coalition of 1800 organisations, announced the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi as the National Safe Motherhood Day in the year 2003 as national safe motherhood day. India is the first country in the world to officially declare National Safe Motherhood Day. On this day, many programs are organized across the country to give proper attention to the nutrition of pregnant women.
