BANGALORE: The Karnataka government has made the decision to chalk out a plan to provide a 50% subsidy to the state's professional weavers so as to enable them to start their units.

It has also been decided to grant occupancy permits to the weavers residing in the weavers' communities.
At a meeting presided over by Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Saturday, a number of such significant decisions were made on various demands of weavers.

According to a statement from the Chief Minister's Office, other decisions made at the meeting included issuing an order that would grant the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board a concession for the weavers who are starting their careers at home by classifying their work as a "cottage industry."

Also, to extend the 'Nekar Sanman' scheme to the individuals working in power looms, to fix the quantity to supply uniforms required under 'Vidya Vikas' programme and to flog a tender for the remaining amount, work orders must be issued in December to ensure it is supplied at the right time, and buy 25 percent of uniforms required for various departments from Karnataka Handloom Corporation.

It has also been planned to provide weavers with an interest-free loan up to Rs. 2 lakh, free power supply for loom weaver machines up to 5 HP, a "pre unit" along the lines of what is provided in Tamil Nadu, and a 50% discount on fixed costs.

According to the statement, the government has resolved to consider incorporating weavers in the unorganized sector and extending all benefits provided to construction employees. Decisions in this regard would be made before the introduction of the upcoming state budget.
